Destination Elopement Photographer in Cancun and Tulum

Destination Elopement Photographer in Cancun, Riviera Maya and Tulum

Some of the most meaningful moments I’ve ever photographed didn’t happen at big weddings. They happened at sunrise on a quiet beach, with just two people, their vows, and the sound of the waves. That’s what an elopement in Cancun or Tulum can feel like. And as a destination elopement photographer with 19 years of experience, I can tell you that these intimate celebrations are some of the most powerful love stories I’ve ever documented.

I’m Tam (she/her), the photographer behind Tam Rico Photo. I’ve photographed over 800 weddings across the Mexican Caribbean, from resort ballrooms to hidden jungle cenotes. But elopements hold a special place in my heart. There’s something different about photographing a couple when it’s just them, no crowd, no schedule, no noise. Just connection.

If you’re considering eloping in Cancun, Tulum, Isla Mujeres, or anywhere in the Riviera Maya, this guide covers everything you need to know, from choosing the right location to understanding what makes a great elopement photographer.

What is a destination elopement (and why Cancun is perfect for it)

An elopement used to mean running away to get married in secret. Today, it means something different. It’s choosing to get married on your own terms, with only the people who matter most, in a place that feels meaningful to you. Some couples elope with just each other. Others bring their kids, their parents, or their best friends. The common thread is intentionality: every part of the day is chosen, not dictated by tradition.

Cancun and the Riviera Maya are ideal for elopements for a few practical reasons. The weather is warm year-round, with golden light that photographers dream about. The landscape offers variety you won’t find in most destinations: turquoise beaches, lush jungle, ancient cenotes, bohemian beachfront venues, and colorful island streets. You can exchange vows barefoot on the sand at sunrise and have dinner at a world-class restaurant that evening.

And unlike some elopement destinations that require complicated permits, Mexico is relatively flexible for intimate celebrations, especially when you work with a photographer who knows the area.

Best elopement locations in Cancun, Tulum, and Riviera Maya

I’ve photographed elopements across this region for nearly two decades. Here are the locations I recommend most, based on real experience.

1

Isla Mujeres

Stunning Views, secret spots, the most calming amazing vibe.

Isla Mujeres elopement locations

Isla Mujeres is my favorite place in the world, so I might be biased. But there’s a reason couples keep choosing this tiny island for their elopements. The turquoise water is unreal, the streets are full of color, and the pace of life slows down the moment you step off the ferry. Punta Sur, at the southern tip of the island, offers dramatic cliffs with panoramic ocean views. Playa Norte is consistently ranked among the best beaches in the Caribbean, and for good reason. And the town itself, with its painted buildings and narrow streets, gives you a completely different backdrop from the beach.

Zoetry Villa Rolandi is a hidden gem on the island. I’ve documented two elopements there, and the resort’s intimate scale makes it ideal for couples who want a beautiful setting without the chaos of a large property. The grounds are lush, the views of the Caribbean are stunning, and the staff genuinely cares about making small celebrations feel special. I’ve photographed elopements on Isla Mujeres that felt like mini adventures. You can start with a ceremony on the beach, walk through town for portraits, and end with sunset drinks at a rooftop bar. The whole island becomes your venue. For more about sessions on the island, visit my Isla Mujeres photographer page.

Tulum

Incredible Spots, amazing Views. Perfect for the two of you!

Tulum elopement locations

Tulum is the most popular elopement destination in the Riviera Maya right now, and for good reason. The combination of jungle, bohemian architecture, and Caribbean coastline creates a setting that feels both wild and elegant. If you’re also considering a full wedding in the area, check out my Tulum wedding photographer page for more details.

Our Habitas is one of my favorite venues for intimate ceremonies. I photographed an elopement there where the venue set up a small gazebo right on their private beach. It was just the couple, the ocean, and golden afternoon light. The simplicity of it made every photo feel like something out of a film. For couples who want something more rustic, there are private beach spots along the Tulum coast that feel completely secluded. The bohemian energy of the area attracts couples who want their elopement to feel more like an adventure than a traditional ceremony.

Cancun

Cancun is Perfect for everything, its just practical, beautiful and there’s a lot to do!

Cancun elopement locations

Cancun’s Hotel Zone beaches offer convenience if you’re staying at a resort, but for elopements I often recommend going a bit further. Isla Blanca, north of Cancun, has stretches of quiet beach with mangroves and open sky. It’s one of the best-kept secrets for intimate sessions because you can have an entire beach practically to yourself.

Costa Mujeres is another option gaining popularity, with dramatic sunsets and a less crowded shoreline. And if you want a resort experience but intimate, several boutique properties in the area cater to small celebrations.

I’ll Photograph your Elopement Story Beautifully

Beautifully

I’ve Photographed many Destination Elopements in Cancun, Isla Mujeres and the Riviera Maya.

Here’s something I want to share because it changed how I think about elopements. A couple I worked with decided they didn’t want a formal ceremony. No officiant, no judge, no legal paperwork on that day. What they wanted was to wake up before sunrise, walk to the beach together, and exchange their own vows privately. They brought their wedding rings and placed them on each other’s fingers as the sun came up over the Caribbean. It was one of the most emotionally powerful moments I’ve ever photographed. And it made me realize that not every couple wants an “elopement” in the traditional sense. Some couples just want an intimate, private moment to offer their hearts to each other, with a photographer there to preserve it.

The intimate vow exchange: a new way to celebrate your love

DESTINATION GUIDE

I’ve started calling this an intimate vow exchange, and it’s something I’d love to offer more couples. It works beautifully as a standalone experience, but also as an add-on to a couples session or engagement shoot. Imagine flying to Cancun, spending a morning exchanging personal vows on a quiet beach, and having those moments documented in photographs you’ll keep forever. You don’t need a permit. No officiant is required. All you need is each other and someone who understands that this moment is sacred. If this resonates with you, I’d love to talk about it.

Elopement photography packages and what to expect

Every elopement is different, so I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all packages. At Tam Rico Photo, I work with couples to create coverage that fits their day, whether that’s two hours on a beach at sunrise or a full day that includes getting ready, a ceremony, portraits, and dinner.

Coverage time is the biggest variable. A simple beach ceremony with portraits typically takes 2-3 hours. If you want to include getting ready, multiple locations, or a celebration dinner, plan for 4-6 hours.

Resort vendor fees are common at all-inclusive properties. Many resorts charge outside photographers a fee to work on their grounds. At Tam Rico Photo, I cover half of the resort vendor fee, up to $500 USD, on collections of 3+ hours. This is something most photographers don’t offer, and it can save you real money.

Deliverables include professionally edited, high-resolution digital images. I deliver every strong image from your session, not a limited number. You’ll have a complete visual story of your day. For specific pricing, visit the pricing page on my website, or book a free call so we can talk about your vision.

Why choosing the right elopement photographer matters

Tam Rico Photo

At a 200-person wedding, the photographer documents what’s happening around them. At an elopement, the photographer is one of the only people present. That changes the dynamic completely. Your elopement photographer isn’t just taking photos. They’re part of the experience. This is the person standing ten feet away while you read your vows to each other. And this is who helps you feel comfortable enough to cry, laugh, and be completely yourselves in front of a camera. This is why hiring a destination elopement photographer with experience matters. At Tam Rico Photo, my approach is documentary. I don’t do stiff poses or artificial setups. I create space for you to connect with each other, and I photograph what’s real.

How to plan your Cancun or Tulum elopement step by step

Planning an elopement is simpler than planning a full wedding, but there are still logistics to consider, especially for a destination elopement in Mexico.

Start with your “why.” Before choosing a venue or a date, talk about what matters most to you both. Is it the privacy? The adventure? The simplicity? Your “why” will guide every other decision.

Choose your location based on the experience you want.

Want barefoot-on-the-beach simplicity? Consider Isla Blanca or Isla Mujeres. Want a bohemian jungle setting? Look at Tulum. Want the convenience of a resort? Cancun’s Hotel Zone has options. I’m happy to help you narrow this down based on what I’ve seen work for other couples.

Book your photographer early.

Elopement photographers in this region book up, especially during peak season from November through April. I recommend reaching out at least 4-6 months in advance. For specific dates around holidays or popular travel weeks, earlier is better.

Consider your timeline and light. Sunrise elopements are magical in this part of the world. The light is soft, the beaches are empty, and there’s a stillness that makes everything feel more intimate. If mornings aren’t your thing, the hour before sunset (golden hour) is equally stunning.

Handle the legal side separately if needed. Many couples who elope in Cancun handle the legal marriage in their home country before or after the trip. This simplifies the process significantly and lets you focus your elopement day entirely on the emotional experience.

Think about additional vendors. For elopements, you usually don’t need much beyond a photographer. But if you want flowers, a musician, hair and makeup, or a videographer, I have trusted local contacts I can recommend. For video, I work closely with Claudia at Deja Vu Video for elopement-scale productions.

LGBTQ+ elopements in Cancun: a genuinely safe space

I’m not an “LGBTQ+ friendly” photographer. Being a member of the LGBTQ+ community shapes everything about how I work. My wife Evamaris and I share a life together, and that relationship is part of what drives my passion for documenting love in all its forms. Because at Tam Rico Photo, love looks good on everyone.

I mention this because I know how important it is for LGBTQ+ couples to feel genuinely safe when choosing a destination elopement photographer. You shouldn’t have to wonder whether your photographer truly understands your relationship. You shouldn’t have to explain yourselves or worry about judgment.

At Tam Rico Photo, there’s nothing to worry about. You’ll be photographed with the same care, attention, and celebration as any couple. Your love story deserves to be told fully, and that’s exactly what I do.

Same-sex marriage has been legal in Quintana Roo (the state where Cancun and Tulum are located) since 2012. Mexico as a whole has been increasingly supportive, and the tourist areas in particular are welcoming. If you’re an LGBTQ+ couple considering an elopement in Cancun or the Riviera Maya, you’re choosing a destination that will celebrate you.

What makes Tam Rico Photo different as a destination elopement photographer

There are many talented photographers in this region. Here’s what makes working with Tam Rico Photo a distinct experience:

19 years photographing in the Mexican Caribbean. I know this landscape the way locals know their neighborhood. I know where the light will be, which beaches are quiet, and how to make any location work for your story.

800+ weddings and celebrations documented. That experience translates to calm confidence on your elopement day. I’ve handled every scenario, from unexpected rain to last-minute venue changes, without missing a beat.

Documentary style, not posed. I don’t ask you to perform for the camera. I create a comfortable environment where you can be yourselves, and I photograph the real moments that happen. The result is photos that feel like you, not like a stock image.

Emotional connection is my priority. I’m neurodivergent, and I’ve found that this gives me a unique ability to tune into the emotions of the couples I work with. I notice the small moments, the hand squeeze during the vows, the look that says everything without words. That sensitivity shows up in the images.

Recognized by Fearless Photographers.

This international organization highlights photographers who tell real stories through their work. Being recognized by Fearless is something I’m proud of because it validates the approach I believe in.

Love looks good on everyone. And an elopement is one of the purest expressions of love there is. If you’re ready to plan yours, I’d love to hear your story.

Frequently asked questions about elopements in Cancun

Elopement photography pricing varies based on coverage time, location, and deliverables. At Tam Rico Photo, you can see transparent pricing on the pricing page. Most elopement collections start with 2-3 hours of coverage and include all professionally edited digital images.

Public beaches in Mexico don’t typically require permits for small, informal ceremonies. If you’re planning something at a resort or private venue, the property handles any necessary permissions. For an intimate vow exchange with just the two of you and a photographer, you generally don’t need any special arrangements.

The dry season from November through April offers the most predictable weather and comfortable temperatures. However, shoulder season months like May and October can be beautiful with fewer crowds and lower prices. Hurricane season runs June through November, with September and October being the most active months.

Absolutely. Many couples choose an intimate vow exchange without any officiant present. You exchange personal vows, share rings if you’d like, and have the moment photographed. If you want a legally binding ceremony, you’ll need a civil judge or authorized officiant, but many couples handle the legal side in their home country and keep the elopement purely ceremonial.

I recommend booking at least 4-6 months in advance, especially for dates during peak season (November through April). Popular dates around holidays and spring break book even earlier. That said, I’ve occasionally accommodated last-minute elopements when my schedule allows, so it never hurts to reach out.

Lightweight, flowy fabrics photograph beautifully in the ocean breeze. Light colors and whites pop against the turquoise water, but there are no rules. I’ve photographed elopements where couples wore formal attire, linen suits, sundresses, and everything in between. Wear what makes you feel like yourselves. Skip the stilettos for beach sand and consider bringing a change of shoes for any non-beach locations.

Yes. Quintana Roo legalized same-sex marriage in 2012, and the tourism areas of Cancun, Tulum, and the Riviera Maya are welcoming and inclusive. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community myself, I can speak to this personally. Tam Rico Photo is a genuinely safe space for all couples.
