I’m Tam (she/her), and I’ve been photographing families in Cancun and the Riviera Maya for 19 years. I know the beaches, I know the light, and I know how to work with kids who have zero interest in standing still and smiling on command.

At Tam Rico Photo, we give you both: the beautiful portrait with everyone looking at the camera and the turquoise water behind you, and the real ones. The ones where your youngest is running toward the waves, your older kid finally cracks a real laugh, and you and your partner share a look that says, “we actually did this.”

Real Sessions on Real Beaches

Family sessions typically run one hour. That’s enough time to get the portraits you came for and still let the kids be kids.
If you’re coming with multiple generations, grandparents, parents, couples, and little ones all together, I offer two-hour sessions so we can photograph the whole family together first and then break into smaller groups. Extended family sessions are some of my favorites. There’s something about three generations in one frame that feels like a gift.

I work with families at some of Cancun’s most beautiful hotel locations, including the JW Marriott Cancun, where the beach is open and the light in the late afternoon is extraordinary, and the Rosewood Cancun, where the setting feels private and effortless. Kids Don’t Need to Perform. They Just Need to Play.

Here’s what I’ve learned after 800+ sessions: the best family photos happen when kids forget there’s a camera.

So instead of lining everyone up and counting to three, I let them run. I let them splash. I let the toddler do whatever the toddler needs to do. I’m watching, I’m ready, and I know exactly when to click.

Yes, we’ll get the portrait where everyone is together and looking great. That one goes on the wall and gets sent to grandma. But my favorite images are the belly laughs, the surprise hugs, the quiet moment when a little one reaches for your hand without thinking about it.

That’s what 19 years of experience looks like: knowing when to direct and when to disappear.

What to Expect from Your Session

Sessions are relaxed, unhurried, and designed around your family’s rhythm. We usually start with a few minutes of everyone getting comfortable, then move naturally from there.

I recommend golden hour, which in Cancun means the last 60 to 90 minutes before sunset, when the light turns warm and soft and the beach gets quieter. If mornings work better for your little ones, early light is equally beautiful.

A few things that make a difference: coordinated colors instead of matching outfits, bare feet on the sand, and leaving the expectations at the hotel room. The most stressful part of a family session is usually the five minutes before it starts. Once we’re on the beach and the kids see the water, everything else takes care of itself.

Families Who Come Back

Some families book me once. Others come back every time they visit Cancun.

One of my favorite families found me through a friend whose wedding I had photographed years before. They came with their kids, and I later realized I had been there when their love story started. Now they have three children and we do a session together every time they return to the Rosewood. Watching a family grow like that, year after year, is one of the things that makes this work feel like more than work.
