A Three-Day Wedding Weekend in the Riviera Maya

SARA + EMILY

Sara and Emily came all the way from New York to say “I do” at Rosewood Mayakoba, and they brought everyone they loved with them. This wasn’t a quiet elopement. This was a full, joyful, three-day LGBTQ wedding weekend at one of the most beautiful venues in the Riviera Maya.

I photographed this wedding alongside my sister Citlalli, and honestly, it was one of our favorite weekends of all time. The love between Sara and Emily was so open and so real that it filled every room, every dance floor, and every quiet moment in between. Their guests showed up with that same energy. Everyone looked incredible. Everyone was present. And the celebration never stopped.

LGBTQ+ Photographer

As a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community myself, I don’t just photograph queer weddings. I celebrate them. I know what it feels like to see yourself reflected in someone’s work, and that’s what I want every couple to feel when they look at their gallery.

We actually started months before the wedding with an engagement session, which gave us time to connect and build trust before the big weekend. By the time the wedding rolled around, we weren’t strangers with cameras. We were part of the crew.

LOVE LOOKS GOOD ON EVERYONE

The weekend kicked off with a pool party at Casa Del Lago. It was exactly the vibe Sara and Emily wanted: relaxed, fun, and full of laughter. Their guests hadn’t all met each other yet, and by the end of that afternoon, it felt like everyone had been friends for years.

That evening, the rehearsal dinner at Aqui Me Quedo brought the group closer together. Tables along the beach, warm light, great food, and an amazing fire show, and to celebrate we are in Mexico, a Piñata. These are the moments I always tell couples not to skip. The rehearsal dinner is where the emotional buildup starts, and Sara and Emily’s was perfect.

Rosewood Mayakoba Wedding

The ceremony took place by the lagoon at Rosewood Mayakoba, and it was everything. Calm water, lush mangroves, soft afternoon light. Sara and Emily stood facing each other surrounded by the people who matter most, and the emotion in that space was something I’ll never forget.

As their LGBTQ wedding photographer

these are the moments I live for. Two people choosing each other, fully and openly, without hesitation. The light at Rosewood’s lagoon ceremony area wraps around you in the late afternoon, and the photos reflect that warmth. Just real, beautiful, golden light.

The reception at La Ceiba Garden and Kitchen brought the party. Imperial Band kept the dance floor packed all night. The garden lighting, the decor by Canteiro Weddings, and the florals by Vanessa Jaimes created a setting that was elegant but never stiff. It was exactly Sara and Emily: joyful, beautiful, and full of life.

We looked at the Photos!!! Omg sooooo incredible/amazing/beautiful/ all the things!!! You guys are the best!!!!

GOT SOME QUESTIONS?

Absolutely. Rosewood Mayakoba is one of the most welcoming luxury venues in the Riviera Maya for LGBTQ couples. In fact, same-sex marriage has been legal in Quintana Roo since 2012, so your wedding is fully recognized under Mexican law. Additionally, the resort’s private estate setting means your celebration feels intimate and personal. As a result, couples like Sara and Emily can celebrate openly with their guests in a space that feels safe and beautiful.

Same-sex marriage is legal throughout Mexico. However, if you’re planning a destination wedding from the US or Canada, it’s important to work with a planner who understands the local legal process.

First, look for a photographer who shows real LGBTQ weddings in their portfolio, not just styled shoots. I wrote a full guide on how to choose an LGBTQ+ wedding photographer in Cancun that covers everything to look for. Furthermore, ask whether the photographer is an ally or a community member, because there’s a difference in how deeply they understand your experience. At Tam Rico Photo, I’m a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community with 19 years of experience photographing destination weddings. As a result, queer couples don’t have to explain themselves or worry about being misunderstood.

Typically, the weekend starts with a welcome event or pool party on day one. Then, the rehearsal dinner brings your closest people together on day two. Finally, the ceremony and reception happen on day three. Sara and Emily followed this exact flow: pool party at Casa Del Lago, rehearsal dinner at Aqui Me Quedo, and their wedding ceremony by the lagoon with the reception at La Ceiba Garden and Kitchen. Consequently, their guests had time to relax, connect, and be fully present for the big day.

No. Unlike many resorts in the Riviera Maya that charge $500 USD or more for external vendors, Rosewood Mayakoba does not charge a vendor fee. Therefore, you can hire the photographer and videographer you actually want without an extra cost. This is one of the reasons Tam Rico Photo loves working at this venue. Either way its always better to ask.

Tam Rico Photo’s Deluxe Collection starts at $5,600 USD (for a detailed breakdown, see my guide on wedding photographer costs in Cancun). This includes 12 hours of coverage, 2 photographers, at least 500 edited images, and an online gallery. Moreover, multi-day packages are available for couples planning a full wedding weekend like Sara and Emily’s. In addition, engagement sessions and proposal coverage can be added to your package.

The dry season from November through April offers the most consistent weather. In particular, the golden hour light at Rosewood’s lagoon ceremony area is stunning between 4:30 and 5:30 PM. On the other hand, if you prefer fewer crowds and lower rates, late October or early May are also great options.
