Post-Wedding Photoshoot in Cancun: Day After, Trash the Dress, and Bring-Your-Dress Sessions

Bring your dress. Bring your love. Let’s tell the story you didn’t get to tell on your wedding day. A post wedding photoshoot in Cancun is one hour, two, or more of pure presence with the person you married, in a place that knows how to hold a love story. No timeline, no vendors waiting, no guests to manage. Just the two of you, the Caribbean light, and the kind of photographs you’ll actually want on your wall.

I’m Tam (she/her), the photographer behind Tam Rico Photo. I’ve been documenting weddings and couples in Cancun and the Riviera Maya for 19 years, more than 800 weddings so far. After all those years, I can tell you that the photographs couples treasure most are rarely the ones from the official ceremony. They’re the ones from the morning after, when everyone has gone home and the world is finally quiet. That’s what this session is for.

What Is a Post-Wedding Photoshoot in Cancun?

A post wedding photoshoot is exactly what it sounds like: a relaxed photo session with you in your wedding attire, after your wedding day is over. You may have heard it called by other names. Day after session. Trash the dress. After session. Rock the frock. Bring your dress shoot. Anniversary bridal session. They all describe the same beautiful idea, photographs of you in your wedding outfit, taken without the chaos of the actual wedding day.

DAY AFTER · TRASH THE DRESS · BRING YOUR DRESS

The original “trash the dress” trend started in the early 2000s and the name made it sound dramatic. Some couples really did destroy their gowns. But the practice evolved. Today most post wedding photoshoots in Cancun do not damage the dress at all. You can wear it again, store it, gift it, or sell it after we’re done. The point is not to ruin anything. The point is to be in your dress one more time, in a place that takes your breath away, with someone who knows how to photograph love.

At Tam Rico Photo I call it whatever feels right for you. Day after session if it’s the morning after your ceremony. Post wedding photoshoot if you came back months later. Trash the dress if you want to splash in the sea and not worry about a single drop. Anniversary session if it’s been years. The name changes. The magic doesn’t.

Who Books a Post-Wedding Photoshoot With Me

This session attracts three kinds of couples, and I want you to know upfront which one you might be.

Couples Who Married With Me in Cancun

Couples who got married with me in Cancun. The wedding day flies by. There’s the ceremony, the family portraits, the reception, the speeches, and somehow it’s already midnight. A post wedding photoshoot the next morning, or two days later, gives us time to slow down. Time to walk barefoot. Time for the photographs you imagined when you were planning, but didn’t actually get to take. If you book my Deluxe Collection and I’m available the day after your wedding, this 1-hour post wedding photoshoot is included as my gift to you.

Couples who got married somewhere else and are honeymooning in Mexico. This is one of the loveliest reasons to book. You had your wedding at home, surrounded by family, exactly the way you wanted. Now you’re here in the Mexican Caribbean for your honeymoon, and you brought the dress (or the suit) because something inside you wasn’t ready to let it go yet. We meet on the beach, in a cenote, or in the jungle, and we make photographs that feel like a continuation of your story.

LGBTQ+ Couples Who Want to Celebrate Freely

LGBTQ+ couples who want to celebrate freely in a place that fully welcomes them. Some of you got married in places where you had to be careful. Where the photographer was kind but didn’t quite get it. Where you couldn’t kiss the way you wanted to in front of your family. Cancun and the Riviera Maya have been welcoming LGBTQ+ couples for decades, and I’m a proud member of the community myself. A post wedding photoshoot here, in the open, with no one watching except me and my camera, can be one of the most freeing experiences of your relationship. Anniversary and Vow Renewal Couples

Bonus group: anniversary and vow renewal couples. I’ve photographed couples who came back for their fifth, tenth, even twenty-fifth anniversary, dress packed in the suitcase. There is no rule that says you can only wear it once.

Where We Photograph Post-Wedding Sessions in Cancun and the Riviera Maya

BEACHES · CENOTES · JUNGLE

After almost 20 years working in this part of Mexico, I know the locations that photograph beautifully and the ones that look better on Pinterest than in real life. Here are the spots I recommend most often for a post wedding photoshoot.

Beaches

Playa Delfines in Cancun is the obvious choice and for a reason: the turquoise water and the white sand are unreal. Quieter alternatives include Punta Cancun at sunrise, the calm shores of Isla Mujeres, and the long beaches of Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Each one has a different personality.

Cenotes

A cenote photo session with a wedding dress is one of the most cinematic things you can do in this region. The natural light filtering through the limestone, the impossibly clear water, the silence of being underground. We have access to several cenotes that allow photo shoots, some open-air, some semi-cave, some completely enclosed.

The Jungle

Less photographed and more dramatic than the beach. The Riviera Maya jungle has spots where the morning light filters through the trees in a way that looks painted. If you want photographs that feel mysterious and editorial, this is the direction.

I help with location planning as part of every session. You don’t need to figure this out alone.

What Happens During Your Post-Wedding Photo Session

Most sessions last one hour, which is enough time for one location and a relaxed pace. We can extend if you want a second location or simply more time together in front of the camera.

We meet at golden hour (the hour before sunset) or at sunrise. The light here is intense in the middle of the day and your dress will photograph better with soft, low-angle light. I’ll tell you exactly where to be and when.

You wear what you wore on your wedding day, or a version of it. Some couples bring a second outfit for variety. Some people leave the dress at home and bring something else, a swimsuit, a flowy dress, casual clothes, whatever feels right.

We walk, talk, laugh, and I photograph. I don’t pose you. I gently guide. The session feels more like a date than a photo shoot, which is exactly the point.

You’ll receive a sneak peek within 2 days and your full gallery (40 or more carefully edited images) within 2 to 3 weeks.

Investment

The post wedding photoshoot in Cancun starts at $900 USD for 1 hour of coverage, includes 40 or more edited images, your private online gallery, and location planning support. Longer sessions and additional locations are available, just ask.

Underwater post wedding photoshoots are possible but require specialized equipment that I rent for the session. If you want to be photographed underwater in your dress, mention it during our call and I’ll send a custom quote.

If you book my Deluxe wedding collection (12 hours of coverage on your wedding day), a 1-hour post wedding photoshoot is included as my gift, valued at $900 USD, subject to my availability the day after your wedding. See full pricing on the Tam Rico Photo pricing page.

A $300 USD retainer holds your date. The balance is paid the day of the session. I accept Zelle and Wise.

Why Couples Choose Tam Rico Photo for Their Post-Wedding Session

Three reasons couples tell me they chose Tam Rico Photo for their post wedding photoshoot in Cancun.

19 Years of Experience and 800+ Weddings

After nearly two decades photographing this part of Mexico, I have 19 years of experience and over 800 weddings documented across Cancun, Tulum, Isla Mujeres, and the entire Riviera Maya. I know where the light falls at every hour, which beaches stay quiet, and how to handle a dress in the wind without losing the moment.

Real LGBTQ+ Inclusion, Not Just a Rainbow Sticker

I am a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community. Every couple is celebrated equally. There are no separate packages, no awkward conversations, no assumptions about who wears what. Love Looks Good on Everyone is not a slogan, it’s how I work.

Documentary Style, No Stiff Posing

My style is documentary. I don’t direct you into stiff poses. I follow your connection, photograph the in-between moments, and let the dress and the place do most of the heavy lifting.

If you want to read what other couples have said, you can find reviews on my Equally Wed profile or scroll through the wedding gallery on tamricophoto.com.

Frequently Asked Questions About Post-Wedding Photoshoots in Cancun

POST-WEDDING PHOTOSHOOT · CANCUN

They are essentially the same thing with different names. Trash the dress is the older term that became popular in the early 2000s, and originally implied damaging the dress in some way. Day after session is the modern, friendlier term for the same idea: a relaxed post wedding photoshoot done after your wedding day. At Tam Rico Photo we don’t damage your dress unless you specifically want us to. The session is about you and your partner, not the gown.

Not at all. Many of my couples got married in their home country and brought their dress on their honeymoon to the Mexican Caribbean. Some came back years later for their anniversary. As long as you have your wedding outfit (or any outfit you want to be photographed in), I’d love to work with you in Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, or Isla Mujeres.

A 1-hour post wedding photoshoot at Tam Rico Photo starts at $900 USD and includes 40 or more edited images, your private online gallery, and location planning support. If you book my Deluxe wedding collection, a 1-hour post wedding session is included at no extra cost, subject to my availability the day after your wedding.

My most-recommended locations are the beaches (Playa Delfines, Isla Mujeres, Tulum), cenotes, and the Riviera Maya jungle. Yes, you can absolutely get in the water. Saltwater rinses out of most fabrics and the dress will be fine if dry-cleaned afterward. Underwater sessions are possible but require special equipment and a custom quote.

Golden hour (the 60 to 90 minutes before sunset) and sunrise. The Caribbean sun is intense at midday and dresses photograph dramatically better in soft low-angle light. I’ll guide you on exact timing for the season you’re visiting.

Not unless you want it to. Saltwater and sand rinse out of most fabrics. Cenote water is fresh and very clean. Jungle sessions are dry. If we walk in the surf or sit in the sand, your dress will need a dry clean afterward but it will not be damaged. Couples who specifically want a paint-or-mud trash session, we can plan that too, just let me know.

Absolutely, and not just welcome, celebrated. I am a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community and have photographed hundreds of LGBTQ+ couples and weddings over the past 19 years. Same-sex marriage has been legal in Quintana Roo since 2012 and Cancun is one of the most welcoming destinations in Mexico for LGBTQ+ travelers.

For peak season (November through April), I recommend booking 2 to 4 months ahead. For other months, 4 to 6 weeks is usually enough. A $300 USD retainer holds your date.
