Jane and Peri’s Surprise Proposal in Playa del Carmen

A Real Surprise Proposal in Playa del Carmen

I was sitting on the sand in Playa del Carmen pretending to be just another tourist. My camera was tucked between my crossed legs, lens quietly pointing toward the water, and my heart was racing. A few minutes later, Peri walked onto the beach holding Jane’s hand. They stopped about ten feet in front of me. Peri glanced at me for half a second, the kind of look that says we’re doing this. Jane had no idea. This surprise proposal in Playa del Carmen had been months in the making, and I was the only person on that beach besides Peri who knew what was about to happen.

I’m Tam (she/her), the photographer behind Tam Rico Photo. In 19 years of documenting weddings and proposals across Cancun, the Riviera Maya, and Playa del Carmen, I’ve worked with more than 800 couples and earned recognition from Fearless Photographers. Jane and Peri’s session is one of my favorites I’ve ever shot. Here’s how their proposal came together, why Peri’s plan was genuinely brilliant, and what any couple can learn from it.

Planning your own surprise proposal?

The Master Plan: Peri’s Iceland Decoy

Peri found Tam Rico Photo through my Calendly link and booked a video call. He was smiling the entire conversation. He’d been planning this proposal for months, and his dad was back home in Washington holding the ring.

The part I loved? Peri knew that anytime he slipped up and mentioned “the ring” or “the proposal” out loud, he needed a cover story. So he built one.

Two weeks after Jane and Peri’s trip to Playa del Carmen, they were flying to Iceland. Every single time Peri wanted to say something about the proposal around Jane, he redirected it to Iceland. He’d say things like “I can’t wait for what we’re going to do in Iceland” or “Iceland is going to be unforgettable.” Over the months leading up to the trip, Jane started assuming Iceland was where the big moment was coming. Her radar was pointed in the completely wrong direction.

That redirection is one of the smartest surprise proposal strategies I’ve seen in years. It lets the person proposing talk openly about the plan without triggering any suspicion, and it moves the spotlight to a completely different trip. If you’re reading this and planning your own surprise proposal in Playa del Carmen, steal this idea. It works.

Why Paradisus Playa del Carmen Worked for This Proposal

Jane and Peri were staying at Paradisus Playa del Carmen, and the reason the location worked had nothing to do with scenery. It had everything to do with logistics.

Paradisus sits next to a public beach that’s just a couple of minutes away on foot. That public access was the real logistical win. I didn’t need resort clearance. No wristband, no check-in, no explaining myself to anyone at the beach bar. I arrived on my own, in a swimsuit I don’t love but had to commit to, with my camera set up before Jane and Peri even left their room.

There’s a lesson here for anyone planning a surprise proposal in Playa del Carmen. The location you pick doesn’t have to be the most iconic beach in Mexico. It has to work with your hotel, your timing, and your photographer’s ability to stay invisible. The magic of a proposal doesn’t come from the backdrop. It comes from the two people standing in the middle of the frame.

The Moment Jane Said Yes

On the day of the proposal, Peri and I shared live location on WhatsApp so we’d meet at the exact same spot without any miscommunication. I got there first. I picked a patch of sand, sat down, crossed my legs, and tucked my camera between them with the lens peeking toward the water. Settings were locked in. I waited.

When they walked up, I caught Peri’s eye for a heartbeat. He gave me the look. Jane was completely oblivious, still chatting about something as they walked. Peri stopped, turned toward her, and asked the question.

Jane cried and laughed at the same time. Her whole body went into that full-sensory “this is really happening” state. She said yes. They held each other. And for a solid few minutes, Jane had no idea there was a woman with a professional camera sitting ten feet away photographing the entire thing. When she finally noticed me, she laughed even harder. That second laugh, the one that realizes she’s been gently ambushed with love, is one of my favorite frames from the whole session.

A Cormorant, Two Soulmates, One Unforgettable Scene

Here’s the moment I keep coming back to. After the proposal itself, while we were walking down the beach making portraits, a cormorant landed nearby. If you haven’t seen one in Playa del Carmen, they’re dark water birds that perch on the sand and open their wings out wide to dry them in the breeze.

This one stopped about fifteen feet from us and started the whole wing-drying ritual. I asked Jane and Peri to walk behind the bird and keep talking to each other. Then I dropped to the sand, belly down, and started army-crawling forward inch by inch so I wouldn’t spook the cormorant off.

Jane and Peri were laughing so hard behind that bird. No posing. No performing for the camera. They were making jokes about me crawling through the sand, about the absurdity of photographing a wild bird on their engagement day, about each other. That is the shot I live for. Two people being completely themselves while nature runs its own show behind them.

A Backhoe, Three Strangers, and One Shared Moment of Joy

Later in the same session, a backhoe rolled up the beach behind us with three guys riding on it, clearly coming back from a shift. In most proposal sessions this is the kind of interruption you’d try to wait out. Jane and Peri didn’t. The moment they noticed the workers, they turned toward them, held up Jane’s ring hand, and started waving like they were flagging down old friends.

The three guys lit up. They threw enthusiastic thumbs up and huge grins from their spots on the yellow machine. Jane was laughing so hard she was doubled over. Peri had that look of pure “this is my person” on his face. For a few seconds, a beach in Playa del Carmen, a backhoe, a newly engaged couple from Washington, and three strangers were all part of the same unplanned, unfiltered celebration.

That’s Jane and Peri. They don’t keep their joy private. They let it include everyone. When the world hands them an unscripted moment, they don’t try to hide from it. They invite it in. Tam Rico Photo gets to stand a few feet away and document what happens when two people are that generous with their happiness.

Why Their Session Felt Different

Jane and Peri have been together for about five years. When you’ve been with someone that long, a proposal isn’t the start of something new. It’s the formal recognition of something you’ve already built. What struck me most about photographing their surprise proposal in Playa del Carmen was how much fun they were having.

They weren’t nervous around each other. Performing wasn’t part of it either. These two were best friends having the best afternoon of their lives on a beach. I didn’t have to direct them once. Not a single chin tilt, fake laugh, or repositioned hand. They were already doing all of it on their own, teasing each other, finishing each other’s sentences, making inside jokes that neither Peri’s dad nor I would understand. Two soulmates in this beautifully chaotic world.

That’s the real secret to a great surprise proposal in Playa del Carmen. The sunset can be gorgeous, a cormorant can show up on cue, a backhoe full of strangers can cheer you on, but none of those surprises matter if the two of you aren’t already the people you want to be around each other. Jane and Peri already were. The location just gave them a stage.

How Tam Rico Photo Documents Surprise Proposals in Playa del Carmen

Over 19 years and more than 800 weddings, I’ve built a documentary-style approach that Fearless Photographers has recognized. Surprise proposals are one of my favorite things to shoot because they require two of my favorite skills: careful planning and total invisibility.

Here’s how Tam Rico Photo typically handles a surprise proposal in Playa del Carmen.

Before the day, we jump on a video call. You tell me the full plan, the timing, the location, any anxieties you have. I help you choose a spot, a time of day (sunset is almost always the answer), and a cover story if you need one. If you don’t have a cover story yet, consider the Iceland Decoy from Peri’s playbook.

On the Day of Your Surprise Proposal

On the day, we coordinate by live location on WhatsApp so we land in the exact same place. I arrive first and blend in. Sometimes that means a swimsuit and a big hat. Sometimes a sundress with a tote bag. Whatever makes me look like every other traveler on the beach.

The moment happens. I stay invisible until it’s done. Once you’ve said yes, I reveal myself and we shift into a short portrait session while the light is still magical. No stiff poses. No “look here and smile.” Just you two, already glowing, already engaged, already celebrating.

You can see full pricing for proposal and wedding coverage on the Tam Rico Photo pricing page. If you want to see how I document couples with the same inclusive, friends-first approach, the LGBTQ wedding photographer in Cancun page shows how every couple is met with the same care.

Frequently Asked Questions About Surprise Proposals in Playa del Carmen

Surprise proposal photography with Tam Rico Photo starts in the mid-range for the region and includes the proposal moment, a short portrait session right after, and a fully edited gallery. Full pricing is on the Tam Rico Photo pricing page, which covers proposals, elopements, weddings, and couples sessions. Pricing varies slightly based on location, timing, and whether you want additional coverage like a rehearsal dinner or welcome event.

Three to six months is the comfortable window, especially if your trip falls in peak season (November through April). That gives us time for a video call, a backup location plan, and any last-minute coordination. Tam Rico Photo does accept last-minute bookings when the calendar allows, so if your proposal is a few weeks away, reach out and we’ll see what’s possible.

It depends on what matters most to you. If aesthetics are the priority, Punta Esmeralda has calmer water and a quieter feel, and Mamitas Beach offers a more classic white-sand look. If logistics are the priority, any public stretch near your hotel works, because the real goal is a spot where your photographer can arrive without raising suspicion. Jane and Peri used the public beach next to Paradisus Playa del Carmen for that exact logistical reason, not for the scenery.

Sunset. The light between roughly forty-five minutes before sunset and the actual moment the sun touches the horizon is the softest, warmest light you’ll get. Sunrise is a close second if your partner is an early riser, with the bonus of nearly empty beaches. Midday light is harsh and rarely flattering.

Not if you’re staying at the resort. If you want a photographer to join you, you’ll either need the resort’s permission (some charge an external vendor fee) or you need to use the adjacent public beach. Jane and Peri’s proposal worked because Paradisus Playa del Carmen sits right next to a public section of sand, which let Tam Rico Photo arrive and photograph without dealing with any resort clearance.

Advance planning is everything. Tam Rico Photo uses live WhatsApp location sharing to arrive at the exact right spot, dresses to blend in (swimsuit, sundress, tourist accessories), and sets up with the camera ready before the couple arrives. A telephoto lens lets me capture close, emotional moments from a comfortable distance so I’m never close enough to be noticed.

Absolutely. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Tam Rico Photo documents every couple with the same care, creativity, and love. Proposals for same-sex couples are one of my favorite things to document, and Playa del Carmen is one of the most welcoming destinations in the world for LGBTQ+ travelers.
