Matt & Adam’s Sunrise Vow Exchange in Playa del Carmen

The Wedding I Didn’t Know I Was Photographing:

Matt & Adam’s Sunrise Vow Exchange in Playa del Carmen

When a Photo Session Becomes Something Sacred

I thought I was showing up for a couples photo session. Beautiful, yes. Meaningful, absolutely. But what I witnessed at sunrise on a quiet Playa del Carmen beach was something I’ll carry with me forever.
Matt and Adam had planned a trip to Cancun for what they described as an “intimate exchange of rings.” They found me through Everywhere is Queer, an app that connects LGBTQ+ owned businesses with our community, and reached out for a photo session. As a lesbian photographer who deeply understands the importance of safe, judgment-free spaces, I was honored they chose me.
What I didn’t know? I was about to become the only witness to one of the most private, emotional moments two people can share.

The Morning Everything Changed

We started at sunrise in Playa del Carmen. The light was that perfect honey-toned glow, warm, cinematic, gentle. The kind of light that makes everything feel like it’s wrapped in magic. Matt and Adam wore simple, natural colors: neutral khaki shorts, a taupe polo, a navy button-up. Nothing elaborate. Nothing performative. Just two people showing up as themselves.
They were calm, loving, and completely open to everything I suggested. We walked through gentle waves, captured quiet embraces, those forehead-touching moments that speak louder than words. The turquoise water and golden sand created this serene backdrop, minimal, organic, and deeply intimate.
Then, about midway through the session, they asked for a moment to themselves.
Of course, I thought. I stepped back, gave them space, and continued shooting from a distance with my long lens. I wasn’t trying to intrude just capturing the atmosphere, the silhouettes, the sunrise painting everything in soft light.
And then I realized: they were exchanging vows.
Behind the Camera, Trying Not to Cry
There I was, standing on a beach at dawn, watching two people promise their lives to each other. No audience. No fanfare. No resort fees or vendor restrictions or hotel coordinators. Just Matt and Adam, the ocean, and the quiet power of choosing each other.
I was tearing up behind my camera.
This wasn’t just a photo session anymore. This was their wedding. And somehow, I had the profound privilege of being the only witness to this sacred, spontaneous moment.
They exchanged rings. They spoke promises meant only for each other (and apparently, one very emotional photographer trying to keep her camera steady). It was intimate in the truest sense, love existing exactly as it should, without needing permission or a venue or anything other than two people deciding this is it, this is us, this is now.

Why This Moment Matters (And Why I’m Sharing It)

After the session, as I drove Matt and Adam back to their hotel (I offer rides to my sunrise couples so they don’t have to worry about taxis plus it gives us time to connect and feel like friends by the time we arrive), they told me more about themselves. They’re animal lovers who rescue puppies. They’re the kind of people who radiate kindness and calm energy.
And they chose to have their most meaningful moment outside the confines of a traditional wedding structure.
Here’s what I want you to know, whether you’re LGBTQ+ or not, whether you’re planning a big wedding or something intimate:
You don’t have to do it the way everyone else does.
You can have your vow exchange, your ring ceremony, your most emotionally significant moment on a quiet beach at sunrise. You can avoid the excessive hotel vendor fees (seriously, some resorts charge $3,000+ just to let outside photographers in). You can create something that feels like you instead of what’s expected.

The Case for Sunrise Sessions & Intimate Ceremonies in Mexico

If you’re getting legally married back home but want something symbolic and beautiful in Mexico, or if you’re planning a destination wedding and want photos without the resort drama, consider this:
Have your photo session BEFORE, DURING, or AFTER your official wedding day

Here’s why it works:
No vendor fees – When you meet me at a public beach, cenote, or location outside your resort, you skip those ridiculous access charges entirely.
Authentic emotion – There’s something about sunrise that strips away pretense. It’s just you, your person, and the moment.
Total privacy – No guests watching, no timeline pressure, no performative energy. Just genuine connection.
Creative freedom – We can shoot in multiple locations: Playa del Carmen beaches, Isla Mujeres, hidden cenotes in Cancun or Playa del Carmen, Tulum coastline. Places that matter to you.
Safe space for LGBTQ+ couples. As a queer photographer, I create judgment-free experiences where you can be completely yourselves. Your love deserves to be celebrated fully and authentically.
What Makes These Photos Different

The series from Matt and Adam’s session feels like a love letter written in light. Soft laughter. Quiet embraces. Walking through gentle waves. Silhouettes at sunrise two figures becoming one light. Faces full of joy and artistic moments that honor their privacy and intimacy.
It’s organic. It’s safe. It’s quietly powerful.
The aesthetic is minimal yet deeply emotional calm tones, clean composition, and a focus on connection rather than forced posing. The palette of sand, seafoam, and sunlight creates something timeless. These aren’t photos that will look dated in ten years. They’re images that capture a feeling that never goes out of style.

For My LGBTQ+ Community: You Belong Here

I’m a lesbian photographer, and creating safe, affirming spaces for queer love is at the heart of everything I do. Whether you found me through Everywhere is Queer, through a friend, or through a Google search at 2 AM while planning your destination celebration I see you, I celebrate you, and I’m here for you.
Your love stories matter. Your intimate moments deserve to be documented by someone who gets it, someone who understands why representation matters, why feeling safe with your photographer matters, why having your full self reflected back to you in images matters.
Matt and Adam trusted me with one of their most vulnerable, beautiful moments. That trust is something I hold sacred with every LGBTQ+ couple (and every couple, period) who works with me.
Planning Your Own Intimate Ceremony or Sunrise Session
Whether you’re planning a symbolic ceremony like Matt and Adam, a surprise vow exchange, or simply want stunning couples photos during your Mexico vacation, here’s what I want you to consider:
Sunrise is magic. Yes, it’s early. Yes, it requires effort. But the light, the privacy, the emotion, it’s worth every early alarm.
You can have meaningful photos without the wedding industry stress. Skip the resort fees. Meet me at a beach, cenote, or scenic location. Create your moment on your terms.
Spontaneity is beautiful. Some of the most powerful moments can’t be scripted. Trust your instincts. Trust your photographer to be ready.
Symbolic ceremonies are valid and meaningful. You don’t need a legal certificate for a moment to matter. Matt and Adam proved that beautifully.

The relief of not having to explain or justify your relationship. The freedom to be affectionate without wondering if your photographer is uncomfortable.
I create space where love is celebrated in all its forms. Loudly, quietly, traditionally, unconventionally. However you want to show up is exactly right.
