LGBTQ+ Wedding Photographer in Cancun and the Riviera Maya

If you’re searching for an LGBTQ+ wedding photographer in Cancun, I want you to know something right away: this isn’t marketing for me. It’s my life. I’m Tam, and I’m a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community. I’m married to my wife Evamaris. And I’ve spent 19 years photographing love stories across the Mexican Caribbean, including hundreds of same-sex weddings, elopements, and couples sessions.

Tam Rico Photo exists because I believe every couple deserves a photographer who truly sees them. Not one who tolerates. Not one who’s open-minded. One who gets it, because they live it.

Love looks good on everyone.

Why “LGBTQ+ Friendly” Isn’t Enough

You’ll see the word “friendly” on a lot of photographer websites. And I’m not here to question anyone’s intentions. But here’s what I know from 19 years in this industry and from being queer myself: there’s a difference between someone who’s willing to photograph your wedding and someone who understands it.

When I photograph a same-sex wedding, I don’t need to be told how to frame two brides. There’s no awkward pause when both partners walk down the aisle. I don’t make assumptions about who’s wearing what, who goes where, or what your family dynamic looks like. I just know. Because this is my world too.

In fact, that comfort shows in the photos. When you feel safe, you relax. When you relax, real moments happen. And those real moments are what Tam Rico Photo is built to document. That’s the difference when you choose an LGBTQ wedding photographer in Cancun who truly understands your love.

Same-Sex Marriage in Cancun: What You Need to Know

Same-sex marriage has been legal in Quintana Roo (the state that includes Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Isla Mujeres) since 2012. Mexico’s Supreme Court has ruled in favor of marriage equality nationwide, and Quintana Roo was one of the first states to make it official.

Here’s what that means for your destination wedding:

Legal ceremonies are fully available. You can have a legally binding same-sex wedding in Cancun, performed by a civil judge. Many wedding planners in the area have experience coordinating legal paperwork for international LGBTQ+ couples.

Symbolic ceremonies are also popular. Many couples choose a symbolic ceremony in Cancun and handle the legal paperwork back home. This is often simpler, especially for couples coming from the US or Canada.

What paperwork do you need? For a legal ceremony, you’ll typically need birth certificates, passports, blood test results from a local lab, and a few days of processing time. A good wedding planner will walk you through it. For a symbolic ceremony, no paperwork is needed.

I’ve been through this process with many couples. If you have questions, I’m happy to share what I’ve learned and connect you with planners who handle LGBTQ+ weddings regularly.

Choosing LGBTQ+-Welcoming Venues in Cancun and the Riviera Maya

Not all venues are created equal when it comes to LGBTQ+ weddings. Most major resorts in Cancun and the Riviera Maya welcome same-sex ceremonies, but the quality of that welcome varies.

Questions to ask your venue:

  • Have you hosted same-sex weddings before? How many?
  • Will the ceremony script be adapted for our couple, or are you using a template written for “bride and groom”?
  • Are your staff and coordinators trained to work with LGBTQ+ couples?
  • Can we see photos or testimonials from past same-sex weddings at your venue?

What I’ve seen over the years: The larger resort chains in Cancun and the Riviera Maya generally have policies in place for LGBTQ+ weddings. But the experience can vary by property and by the individual coordinator assigned to your event. A good wedding planner who has worked with LGBTQ+ couples before can make a huge difference.

Boutique venues and independent spaces often offer more flexibility and a more personalized experience. If you’re looking for something intimate, this route might feel more you than a large resort.

Your LGBTQ Wedding Photographer Cancun: My Story

In fact, I’ll be honest. In the beginning, I wasn’t sure how open I was going to be about my identity as a photographer. I worried it might turn people away. I wondered if keeping things neutral was the safer business decision.

However, the more I worked, the more I realized that being open about who I am was exactly what made my work different. The couples who found me because of it told me again and again that it mattered. It mattered that they didn’t have to explain themselves. It mattered that their photographer understood the weight and the joy of their celebration.

Ultimately, it’s the core of everything I do with Tam Rico Photo. It’s not a niche or a specialty. It’s who I am. And I wouldn’t change a thing.

Over 800 weddings later, I can tell you that the moments I’m proudest of are the ones where a couple told me they felt completely themselves in front of my camera. As an LGBTQ wedding photographer in Cancun, that’s what drives everything I do.

Planning Your LGBTQ Wedding in Cancun: Photographer Tips

Planning a destination wedding is already a big undertaking. For LGBTQ+ couples, there are a few extra considerations worth thinking about early.

Choose vendors who get it. Your photographer, planner, officiant, and florist should all be comfortable with and experienced in LGBTQ+ celebrations. Don’t be afraid to ask directly. A vendor who hesitates or gives a vague answer isn’t the right fit.

Think about your guest experience. Cancun is a welcoming destination overall. Let your guests know that Cancun is an international tourist hub with a strong tradition of hospitality. Same-sex couples walk the streets, eat at restaurants, and enjoy the beach without issues.

Consider your ceremony format. One of the things I love about LGBTQ+ weddings is that there’s no template. You get to build the ceremony that fits your relationship. Two walks down the aisle? One walk together? No aisle at all? It’s up to you.

Most importantly, book your photographer early. LGBTQ+-experienced photographers in Cancun are still a small group. If this matters to you, don’t leave it as one of the last things you book.

FAQ: LGBTQ Wedding Photographer Cancun

Is Mexico safe for LGBTQ+ weddings?

Cancun and the Riviera Maya are among the most welcoming destinations in Latin America for LGBTQ+ couples. Quintana Roo legalized same-sex marriage in 2012, and the tourism industry here is built around international visitors. In the resort zones, beach clubs, and tourist areas where weddings happen, you’ll feel welcome.

Will the resort staff be respectful?

In my experience, yes. The major resorts in Cancun and the Riviera Maya serve international guests year-round and have policies around inclusivity. If you want extra peace of mind, ask your planner to confirm the resort’s experience with same-sex ceremonies.

Do we need special paperwork for a same-sex wedding in Mexico?

The legal requirements are the same as for any civil marriage in Quintana Roo: birth certificates, passports, blood tests, and processing time. There’s no separate process for same-sex couples. Many couples opt for a symbolic ceremony in Cancun and complete the legal paperwork in their home country.

How do you handle family dynamics?

Every family is different. Some are fully supportive. Some are complicated. And some couples choose to elope specifically because of family tension. Whatever your situation, I meet you where you are. My job is to photograph your day with sensitivity, warmth, and zero judgment.

Do you have experience with non-binary and gender-nonconforming couples?

Yes. Tam Rico Photo is a safe space for all gender identities and expressions. I use whatever names and pronouns you share with me, and I never make assumptions about how you want to be represented in your photos.

What if we want to elope in Cancun with an LGBTQ wedding photographer?

I love elopements. Some of my favorite sessions have been with couples who chose a sunrise beach ceremony with no one else around. Elopement photography starts at the same rate as standard session pricing. It’s your day, your way.
