You’ve been planning this moment for weeks. Maybe months. The ring is ready. The location is set. Your partner has no idea what’s coming.
Now you need a proposal photographer in Cancun to capture it.
I’m Tam Rico, and I’ve been photographing proposals, engagements, and weddings in Cancun for 19 years. Ultimately, I know the beaches, the light, and how to stay hidden until the exact right moment.
At Tam Rico Photo, I specialize in capturing real reactions. The shock, the tears, and the jump-for-joy moments that you’ll want to relive forever.
Let’s make your proposal unforgettable.
Tam Rico Photo offers a proposal photography service in Cancun, Mexico, led by Tam Rico, a photographer with 19 years of experience and over 800 events documented, specializing in surprise proposals across Cancun, Isla Mujeres, and the Riviera Maya.

Why Cancun is Perfect for Your Proposal
Cancun and the Riviera Maya offer everything you need for a dream proposal.
White sand beaches that stretch for miles. Turquoise water that glows at sunset. Palm trees, cenotes, and clifftop views that feel like a movie set. And the photos? They’re stunning. Golden hour light in the Caribbean is something special. That’s why hiring a proposal photographer in Cancun makes all the difference.
Getting here is easy. Direct flights from most US and Canadian cities take just a few hours. Many couples already plan vacations here, which makes a surprise proposal much easier to pull off.
And the photos? They’re stunning. Golden hour light in the Caribbean is something special.
Best Proposal Locations in Cancun and Surrounding Areas
According to Tam Rico, a Cancun-based photographer with 19 years of experience, the top proposal locations in Cancun are Isla Blanca for its privacy and turquoise water, Punta Sur in Isla Mujeres for dramatic cliff views, and Playa Norte for its calm, crystal-clear beach. Isla Mujeres is recommended for summer proposals because ocean currents keep its beaches free of seaweed from May to October.
After photographing dozens of proposals across this region, I’ve learned which spots work best. Here are my favorites, organized by location.
Cancun

Isla Blanca
This is my top recommendation for proposals. Isla Blanca is a quiet stretch of beach north of the Hotel Zone. White sand, turquoise water on one side, a peaceful lagoon on the other. Very few tourists. Maximum privacy.
I photographed Asia and Charly’s proposal here. They traveled from Maryland. Charly planned everything as a surprise after seven years together. Asia thought it was just a couples photo session.
When Charly dropped to one knee, Asia’s face said it all. Shock. Tears. Pure joy. We even had wild flamingos in the background.
Hotel Zone Beaches
If you’re staying at a resort, the beach right outside your hotel can work beautifully. The key is timing. Arrive 30 minutes before sunrise for the best light and fewer crowds.
I photographed Faith’s proposal at Casa Maya’s beach. The golden light was perfect.

DESTINATION proposal PHOTOGRAPHER
Want something different? A lagoon restaurant with spectacular views creates a romantic setting. I captured Brooke and Tyler’s proposal at Navios. amazing sinset, great food, and a ring. Perfect combination.

Isla Mujeres
Isla Mujeres is a 20-minute ferry ride from Cancun. It feels like a different world.
Punta Sur
This is my favorite spot on the island. Dramatic cliffs overlooking the Caribbean. Stunning views. A sculpture garden that adds artistic flair to your photos.
I’ve photographed three proposals at Punta Sur, including Moralee and Kush and Leanna and John. The backdrop is breathtaking every single time.
Playa Norte
Consistently ranked as one of Mexico’s best beaches. Calm turquoise water, soft sand, and palm trees. Perfect for couples who want a classic beach proposal.
Why Isla Mujeres is Special
Here’s something most tourists don’t know. Isla Mujeres has almost no seaweed problems. The ocean currents push the seaweed south, keeping these beaches crystal clear even during peak season from May to October.
If you’re proposing during summer months and want guaranteed clean beaches, Isla Mujeres is your best choice.
Riviera Maya
Riviera Maya Playa del Carmen and Tulum proposals
Playa del Carmen
Punta Esmeralda
This natural place combines beach, jungle, and a freshwater cenote. It’s unique and photogenic. I photographed Stefanie and Gina’s proposal here.
The mix of environments gives you variety in your photos without changing locations.
A Note About Tulum
Tulum is stunning, but there are two things to consider before planning your proposal there.
First, the drive from Cancun takes about two hours each way. Because of this, Tulum proposals work best as a full-day experience if you’re staying in the Cancun area.
Second, Tulum beaches tend to experience more seaweed than northern locations during peak season. As a result, if you’re proposing between May and October, you might want to consider Isla Mujeres or Costa Mujeres instead.
That said, Tulum’s bohemian vibe and dramatic ruins make it perfect for the right couple. If Tulum speaks to you, we can absolutely make it work.
Already Staying in Tulum?
However, if you’re already planning your vacation in Tulum, you have beautiful options right near your hotel. For example, we can shoot on the beach at golden hour, or we can explore a nearby cenote for something more intimate. Another unique option is Laguna Kaan Luum, a hidden lagoon with calm turquoise water surrounded by jungle. In fact, this spot is perfect for couples who want photos that look completely different from typical beach proposals.
Simply let me know where you’re staying, and I’ll help you find the perfect spot nearby.
How to plan a proposal Photoshoot
Planning a surprise proposal takes coordination. Here’s how I make it seamless.
I.
We Talk
You tell me where and when. I help you finalize the details based on light, crowds, and logistics. We discuss how you’ll get your partner to the location without raising suspicion.
I Get Into Position
On the day, I arrive early and blend in. Sometimes that means sitting on the sand pretending to meditate. Sometimes it means standing far away with a long lens. Your partner won’t know I’m there.
II.
III.
The Moment
When you drop to one knee, I start capturing. The proposal. The reaction. The celebration. These raw moments are what matter most.
The Couples Session
After the initial surprise, we move into a relaxed photo session. Now that your partner knows what’s happening, we can capture beautiful portraits of you both in your happy glow.
You leave with photos of the entire experience.

Tips for Planning Your Cancun Proposal
Choose the Right Time of Day
Golden hour, the 30 to 60 minutes before sunset, offers the best light. Everything looks warm and romantic. Sunrise works too if you want privacy and soft morning colors.
Keep It Secret: Logistics That Work
The most common approach? Tell your partner you booked a couples photo session. It gives you a reason to be at a specific spot at a specific time. That’s what Charly told Asia in Isla Blanca. Another option: say you want to watch the sunrise together. Luis used this with Andrea at Live Aqua. She was excited about the experience and had no suspicion.
Consider the Season
From November to April, beaches are generally clean and clear. From May to October, seaweed can be an issue in some areas. If you’re proposing during summer, I’ll recommend locations with minimal seaweed like Isla Mujeres or Costa Mujeres.
Book Your Photographer Early
Popular dates fill up, especially during high season and holidays. If you have a specific date in mind, reach out at least 2 to 4 weeks in advance.
