And yet, in all the proposals I’ve photographed there, I have never once felt like we were crowded. The reason is the cliffs. Punta Sur sits at the southernmost tip of Isla Mujeres, and the landscape there is unlike anything else in the region. The cliffs are a labyrinth. Different textures, different levels, shadows falling across ancient rock, wild plants growing from the stone, and everywhere you turn, the Caribbean stretching out in every direction. There is always a private corner. Always a spot that feels like it was made for exactly this moment.

The cliffs are where the magic happens. Forget the lighthouse, it doesn’t photograph well and the view is blocked. The cliffs are your location. What I love most about them is the variety. In a single session, you can move through completely different environments: open rocky outcroppings with the full sea behind you, narrow paths with plants and shadow on both sides, dramatic drops where the waves crash far below, and quieter corners that feel entirely secluded.

Taking the Ferry from Cancun
I always recommend Ultramar for the crossing. It’s reliable, comfortable, and runs frequently throughout the day. Check schedules in advance because they change regularly and you don’t want to be guessing on the day of your proposal. From the ferry terminal in Isla Mujeres, a taxi to Punta Sur takes approximately 15 minutes. This is important for your timeline.
Where to Catch the Ferry Depends on Where You’re Staying
If you’re staying in the Hotel Zone in Cancun, there is an Ultramar departure point directly from the Hotel Zone. This is the most convenient option for most couples visiting from resorts along Cancun’s beach strip. If you’re staying in Playa Mujeres or the Costa Mujeres area, the Puerto Juarez terminal is much closer and more economical. It’s worth knowing this in advance so you’re not traveling in the wrong direction before one of the most important moments of your life.
Arrive One and a Half Hours Before Sunset
This is non-negotiable. Punta Sur requires walking, and there is a lot of ground to cover to reach the best cliff locations. Rushing to a proposal is never a good idea, and beyond that, arriving early gives you time to settle in, find the light, and let the nerves transform into excitement. I always ask couples to meet me at the entrance with at least 90 minutes before sunset. That timing makes everything feel relaxed and intentional, which is exactly how a proposal should feel.
What to Bring When Meeting Your Proposal Photographer in Isla Mujeres
These are the things I wish every couple knew before arriving at Punta Sur.
Comfortable shoes. The cliffs involve uneven terrain, rocks, and natural paths. This is not the place for heels or sandals that don’t stay on. If you want to change into nicer shoes for photos after the proposal, bring them in a bag and switch once you’re at your spot.
Water. The walk is longer than it looks on a map, and the Caribbean sun is real. Bring more water than you think you need.
A small handheld fan. Sometimes the breeze at Punta Sur is perfect and refreshing. Other times, it’s genuinely hot with no wind at all. A small portable fan takes up no space and can make a real difference in how comfortable and relaxed everyone feels during the session.
And the tip nobody tells you: When you pay the entrance fee at the gate, ask them to staple your wristbands to your bag instead of putting them on your wrists. The wristbands are bright and plastic and they show up in every photo. This sounds like a small thing. It isn’t. I’ve seen it ruin otherwise perfect shots, and it takes two seconds to avoid.
